Missouri rules for card-show vendors
- Rate
- The state rate is 4.225%, plus city, county and special-district taxes (some combined rates near 10% or higher). The return breaks event sales out by city or county so DOR can distribute local tax. Collect the correct local rate for the event location.
- What you need
- Missouri sales tax license. Individuals and general partnerships who do not sell continually in Missouri apply with Form 2643S (Special Events Application). LLCs and corporations reportedly use Form 2643A (third-party source).
- Cost
- Not stated on the DOR FAQ. Missouri may require a bond for new licenses (not verified).
- How to get it
- Unregistered vendors contact DOR 3-4 weeks before the event (573-751-5860, businesstaxregister@dor.mo.gov). After the event you can close the account or keep it open, in which case returns are due even with no tax.
- The organizer
- None assigned by the DOR FAQ. Every vendor making retail sales needs its own Missouri tax ID.
- Filing and paying
- Returns on DOR's preprinted forms (Form 53-1 if needed), with event sales broken out by city or county. Orders taken at the event and filled from your business location are reported under that location.
- Occasional sellers
- Not researched.
- Trades
- Not researched.
- Are cards taxable?
- Taxable as tangible personal property. No exemption found.
Keeping the numbers straight
Add the show in the Shows tab of the ledger with the venue's combined rate and tie each sale to it. The card-show sales tax log then shows taxable sales, the tax you owe at the rate, the tax you actually collected and the gap, so the return is a copy job. If you priced cards with tax included, tick that box and the tax is backed out of each sale.
General rules that apply in every state, like resale certificates and tax-inclusive pricing, are in the card show sales tax guide. For trades, see record-keeping for card trades.
